It’s going to be a rainy Christmas for residents of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry this time around! The Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued warnings for adverse weather in several areas. Heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry because of a cyclonic circulation brewing over the Bay of Bengal. Scroll on to learn more about this.
Third Level Cyclone Alert For Tamil Nadu And Puducherry
The RMC has issued a third-level cyclone alert for seven ports in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. According to NDTV, the alert covers ports such as Chennai, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Ennore, Kattupalli, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Given the adverse weather conditions, the authorities have advised vigilance and preparedness for potential weather disruptions.
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai issued this alert after a low-pressure system was observed over the central western Bay of Bengal. While it has weakened into a depression, heavy rains and thunderstorms are still expected to hit the region.
Isolated heavy rains are expected in Chengalpattu, Viluppuram, and Cuddalore areas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on December 24. On Christmas day, thunderstorms and lightning are predicted across parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal region. Light to moderate rainfall is also expected in other areas. Furthermore, light to moderate rain is predicted in isolated spots across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from December 26 to December 28.
RMC Predicts Heavy Rains In These Districts
The cyclonic circulation observed over the Bay of Bengal extended up to 3.1 km above mean sea level, is projected to move west-southwestward. It is expected to reach northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh coasts by December 24. According to Hindustan Times, Thoothukudi, a coastal district in Tamil Nadu is going to be the worst hit because of heavy rains.
Besides Thoothukudi district, areas like Ettayapuram, Kamanayakkanpatti, Nalatinputhur, Maniyachi, Pandavar Mangalam, Chitangulam, Mooppanpatti, and Ilubaiyurani in Tamil Nadu are expected to receive heavy rains. These areas have been experiencing rainfall since early Monday morning.
