Lately, airlines are noticing an upward trend in badly-behaved passengers, who refuse to follow basic airline etiquette and even end up endangering the lives of their fellow passengers. Recently, a passenger from Rajasthan, flying from Dubai to Mumbai on an IndiGo flight was caught smoking in the lavatory. Here’s what happens next.

According to a report by News18, Kawraj Tagat Singh, a man from Rajasthan was caught smoking in a lavatory of an IndiGo Dubai-Mumbai flight when it was mid-air. This incident took place on August 3. When the flight was mid-air, the crew started smelling smoke from inside the lavatory. When they investigated the matter, they found a piece of burnt cigarette butt inside the toilet.

The crew immediately went and enquired about this to Kawraj Tagat Singh, The man handed over his cigarette pack and lighter to the crew. After this realising this, the IndiGo flight of Dubai-Mumbai flight reported the matter police station on landing. The police registered a case under section 336 of the IPC Act and 25 of Aircraft rules for endangering the life and personal safety of others.

The Rajasthan man smoked in the lavatory, mid-air and endangered the lives of passengers. It was a very serious matter and he was arrested for the same. Despite smoking is strictly prohibited in airlines across India and the world, there is a rise in passengers caught smoking on flights.

This Offence Can Lead To Imprisonment & Hefty Fines

This is not the first time a passenger was caught smoking mid-air on an IndiGo flight. In July, a 28-year-old man was also caught smoking in the lavatory of an IndiGo Bahrain-Mumbai flight. And then in March this year, a passenger lighted a cigarette inside an IndiGo aircraft. But the offender didn’t go scot-free. He was arrested when the flight landed at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru.

As per Indian Aircraft Rules, 1937, passengers caught smoking onboard can face fines up to ₹10 lakhs and may also face imprisonment for up to 2 years as they commit an act that imperils the safety of passengers and the crew.
