In Jaisalmer’s Thar Desert, There Is An Exclusive Blood Moon Viewing Experience Happening In September

In the stillness of the Thar Desert in Jaisalmer, when the wind dips and the night deepens, the sky will play host to a spectacle as old as time! From September 6 to 8, 2025, the desert is all set to host a lunar eclipse viewing experience in Jaisalmer. Starscapes, India’s pioneer in astro-tourism, is inviting travellers to witness it in the most fitting setting possible: the open dunes of Shama Desert Camp.

Jaisalmer’s Thar Desert To Host Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse Viewing

Jaisalmer Lunar Eclipse

Over two nights, participants will watch the lunar eclipse in Jaisalmer in its entirety. The Moon will glow like a copper ember suspended in the dark. Astronomers on-site will not only walk guests through the mechanics of the eclipse but also weave in the lore, history, and cultural symbolism that have followed this celestial drama across civilisations.

The programme is designed to keep the desert alive both day and night. Once the Sun sets, laser pointers will trace constellations into the velvet sky, and telescopes will lock onto Saturn’s rings and Jupiter’s swirling atmosphere. Stories will flow, with some rooted in mythology, others in astrophysics.

For those who wish to capture the night, hands-on astrophotography sessions will teach how to frame the Moon’s slow transformation. Daytime is no less compelling, with solar telescopes revealing the Sun’s surface in startling detail, interactive astronomy workshops for all ages, and the unhurried rhythm of the desert itself.

All You Need To Know

Between skywatching sessions, guests will step into Jaisalmer’s layered history. Visits to the imposing Sonar Quila, the tranquil Gadisar Lake, and the Longewala War Memorial will provide context to the land beneath the stars. Evenings will close around campfires, with Rajasthani flavours on the plate and the desert horizon stretching endlessly into the night.

Jaisalmer offers one of the clearest skies in India at this time of year,” said Ramashish Ray, founder of Starscapes and the pioneer behind the upcoming lunar eclipse viewing event. “Pairing a rare astronomical event with the cultural depth of Rajasthan makes for an experience that’s both visually striking and personally meaningful,” he added.
