From Theatre To Television: Rajesh Tailang’s Unpredictable Journey
Rajesh Tailang shared his journey into the world of acting and direction. Starting theatre at the age of 11 or 12, Tailang’s passion deepened through participation in children’s workshops at the National School of Drama (NSD). It was during these workshops that he discovered a three-year post-graduate course at NSD, where he was fortunate enough to gain admission on his first attempt. His newfound confidence led him to Bombay, but his first big break came through the popular daily soap Shanti, which aired in 1994.
Despite this early success, Tailang admitted that the journey to consistent work hadn’t been smooth, citing a mix of his own decisions and luck. After Shanti, he moved away from television to explore films, though none of his ventures were commercially successful. As television evolved, with family dramas becoming dominant, Tailang returned to Delhi, helping his brother with documentaries. This led him to direct episodes of the popular series India’s Most Wanted. His career came full circle when Delhi Crime director Richie Mehta offered him another directing opportunity, showcasing his versatility in the industry.
