Ibudhou Marjing Temple

In Heingang, Imphal East, there is a temple called Lord Ibudhou Marjing Temple that honors the God of Polo.

The game of Polo originated in Manipur, and Lord Marjing was the person who invented it. In the Meitei mythology and religion of Ancient Kangleipak, he is the god of horses, polo, hockey, sports, and war (early Manipur). Marjing is mentioned as the protector of the north-east direction, whereas references to Koupalu (northwest), Thangching (southwest), and Wangpulen (south-east) are made for the other directions.

The story is that he created the national game, polo (Sagol Kangjei), and made it popular. Samadon Ayangba is his divine beast, and he lives atop the Heingang Ching (Marjing Hills).

Lai Haraoba Celebrations

A mime-like ceremony is performed by a Maibi, or priestess, during the Lai Haraoba celebration. She mimics the game of polo while brandishing a mallet.

Devotees present God Marjing with polo sticks and bamboo root balls atop the Heingang Hills annually. Even in cases where an animal in the home becomes ill, this is done.

During King Khagemba’s reign in 1618 AD, public worship was held at both his residence and every wet spot along the riverbank. God Marjing was offered wild boars, ducks, cocks, hens, pigeons, and other animals.

In Imphal, the capital of Manipur, Union Home Minister Amit Shah dedicated the Marjing Polo statue in January 2023. The polo player’s statue is 120 feet tall. N. Biren Singh, the chief minister, was also present for the event. This 120-foot-tall effigy of Sagol Kangjei (Polo) was finished in December 2022 at the shrine of Ibudhou Marjing in Imphal East’s Heingang Hill.

The statue would exalt Manipur, the polo sport’s birthplace. The initiative will also boost tourism, which will open up work opportunities for the local populace.
