An Indian American citizen has lamented his frustration over the lack of civic sense of his desi neighbours. In the viral Reddit post, he accused them of disturbing people, speaking loudly, and even spitting gutka in the complex. According to him, their behaviour has led to complaints from other residents and even anti-Indian remarks from American neighbours.

The man, who has lived in the same building for six years, said he had never experienced such problems before. But since a new Indian family moved in downstairs, living in the building is said to have been turned upside down. He explained how the couple and their children often tromp around their apartment, making the whole building shake, including furniture and televisions in other residences.
Apart from this, the man blamed the family for talking loudly, including late into the night. The man also accused them of spitting gutka in shared spaces, such that one can see stains on walls and floors. This incident has discredited the image of Indian residents in the building.
He complained about facing jokes and bad remarks from American neighbours because of the behaviour of the family. In his view, their behaviour perpetuates bad stereotypes about Indians overseas.

The post, which was first shared on Reddit, elicited divided reactions. Some sympathised with the man, and they agreed that such actions tarnished the reputation of Indians abroad. Others felt that it was unjust to generalise an entire community based on a single family’s action.
One user wrote, “This is why we get a bad reputation abroad. Basic civic sense is essential!” Another wrote, “Not everyone is the same, but unfortunately, people like this spoil it for the rest of us.”
Meanwhile, some users downplayed the incident, recommending the man should attempt to speak to his neighbours rather than ranting online.
Incidents like this bring into focus the need to adjust to varying social norms while staying in a foreign country. Although cultural practices are different, civic sense and consideration for common areas are essential for living in harmony with others.
