South Korea has its own paradise for coffee lovers — Gangneung, popularly known as the ‘City of Coffee’. Along the white sandy beach of Anmok in Gangnueung, lies a street dotted with cafes. As the name suggests, the Coffee Bean Bread resembles a coffee bean. Synonymous with the Coffee Street in Gangnueung, this bread is akin to walnut cakes in size. Sold in perfect bite-sized portions, the dark-brown-hued bake is a feast for the senses. Since we eat with our eyes first, at first glance it’s appetizing and certainly Insta-worthy!

The bread is moist and soft. Filled with danpat, a rich red bean paste, that makes its way into many South Korean desserts including the fish-shaped pastry Bungeoppang and the rice cake dumpling Bukkumi, Coffee Bean Bread has a distinct flavour that stands out. The red bean filling is complemented by a strong aroma of coffee seeped in the batter. The bitter-sweet notes of coffee and the invigorating flavours of the red bean paste pair beautifully.
