Beginning Of The Harvesting Season

An Assamese festival called Rongali Bihu is also known as Bihu and is an occasion to celebrate the New Year. The festival is held to thank God for a prosperous harvest season and welcome the return of spring. Rongali Bihu is known as Bohag Bihu. this is that one beautiful time of the year when you can witness the beauty, traditions and culture of Assam all at once.

A Celebration Of Song, Food, And Festivities

Rongoli Bihu brings along singing, festivities and feasting. Men and women perform the traditional Bihu dance during the celebration of the new year. The festival lasts for seven days. People observe Rongoli Bihu by waking up early and taking a turmeric and urad dal bath, wearing new clothes, and seeking blessings from elders. Next, they eat Jalpan – sticky rice paired with curd and jaggery.  It is celebrated in seven phases. The seven phases are known as Chot, Raati, Goru, Manuh, Kutum, Mela and Chera.

Traditional Clothes And Delicacies 

In celebration of Bohag Bihu, youth wear colourful clothes, such as Dhotis, Gamosas, and saadar mekhelas, while performing Bihu songs and dancing, demonstrating the culture of Rongoli Bihu. Bihu fairs are held at several places so that people from all over Assam can gather and enjoy Assamese delicacies and games during the festival. During the festival, farmers light sky lamps in their fields and then hang them from tall bamboo. This is a custom followed to ward off evil.
