According to Russia’s national weather department, a 146-year-old record has been broken by the snowfall. Thick layers of snow have covered not just Moscow but several other regions across the country. And yes, it is easy to see why people think the visuals look unreal. The videos going viral on social media genuinely look AI-generated. An X user, @LinusEkenstam, also posted a video and wrote, “100% of Russia is currently covered in snow.”
As per a report by India Today, Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula is witnessing record-breaking snowfall. Towns and roads have been buried under deep layers of snow. Kamchatka is reportedly facing one of its harshest winters in recent years. The situation has forced emergency services to issue alerts. Authorities have also increased the frequency of snow-clearing operations. Images and videos online show vehicles completely submerged under thick blankets of snow.

Despite the conditions, children are not holding back. Video posted by X user @T_Investor_ shows kids playing and enjoying in the snow! But what is behind this unusual snowfall in Russia this year? According to a report by India Today, repeated cyclonic systems over the Pacific Ocean are one of the major reasons behind the snowstorms.
These systems are pulling in large amounts of moisture. When this moisture meets freezing air over Kamchatka, it turns into heavy snowfall. This winter, storms have also arrived frequently, leaving very little time for snow to melt before fresh layers accumulate.
While the visuals look beautiful, the snowfall has disrupted daily life for many people. Roads connecting towns and villages have been closed. Flights are facing delays and cancellations. Public transport services have also been suspended in several areas. Schools and offices in some districts have been temporarily shut.
