Saudi Arabia is known for its rich cultural heritage and the holy land draws in Muslims from around the world for their mandatory religious service. And recently Riyadh, which is the Saudi capital was ranked as the 3rd Arab city in the IMD Smart City Index 2023. 4 Saudi Cities Rank High On The Smart City Index 2023
According to Saudi Press Agency, it is for the first time that the cities of Makkah, Jeddah, and Madinah were included in the observatory. They were also ranked in the fourth, fifth, and seventh positions, respectively. Talking about the global level, in a list of 141 cities that were included in the Smart City Observatory:
- Riyadh stood at 30th position
- Makkah stood at 52nd position
- Jeddah stood at 56th position
- Madinah stood at 85th position
So, the reason for this survey is attributed to figuring out how technology enables cities in achieving a higher quality of life for their people.

What Are The Top 10 Cities In 2023?
As it happens, the IMD index, this year, it has placed a special focus on the realisation of the population about the impact of smart technology systems, which their cities’ employ to improve their lives. Moreover, for the Middle East region, Abu Dhabi ranked at the 13th and Dubai at the 17th positions, respectively. Talking about the top 10 cities, they are as follows –
- Zurich
- Oslo
- Canberra
- Copenhagen
- Lausanne
- London
- Singapore
- Helsinki
- Geneva
- Stockholm
It is also worth mentioning that the improvement in the rankings of Saudi cities come after the result of collaborative efforts. These include by agencies like the National Smart City Platform, which was launched by Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority.
