Turkish Airlines Introduces World’s Oldest Bread To Its In-Flight Menu

Turkish Airlines, in a bid to elevate the flying and dining experience for its Business Class passengers, has introduced ‘The Oldest Bread’ to its in-flight menu. The recently launched bake is served in hessian pouches, like a priced piece of jewellery, to be unravelled by the elated passenger. Made of Emmer and Einkorn Wheats, considered the oldest types in Anatolia, is a cradle of the most ancient civilisation.

By giving their passengers the opportunity to experience the flavours of Turkish history first-hand, the airline builds a bridge between the nation’s traditions and modern innovations. Around 12,000 years ago, the first seeds of agriculture were sown in what is known today as the Fertile Crescent. Nestled between the valleys and slopes of Taş Tepeler, it witnessed the rise of early human communities.

From a nomadic hunter-gatherer lifestyle, the human civilisation in Anatolia slowly shifted to being settlers. In the fertile, resource-rich land, wheat was the turning point. Similarly, the bread made of the ancient Emmer and Einkorn wheat could be the turning point of your air travel experience.

Served To Business Class Passengers As Priced Culinary Gems

Blending the past and the present together, Turkish Airlines brings a piece of Anatolian agrarian history, 30,000 feet mid-air. The world’s oldest bread is presented to passengers before meal service with butter and olive oil as accompaniments. Turkish DO&CO, the airline’s Istanbul-based baking company meticulously bakes these breads to perfection.

Award-winning Turkish culinary historians Ömür Akkor, and academic Çetin Şenkul offered their knowledge and advice to leave no stone unturned in recreating a piece of Turkiye’s culinary history. The result is a beautiful bread, golden and crisp on the outside and pillowy on the inside. Best eaten lathered with copious amounts of butter and drizzles of olive oil.
