Scotch Whisky Lovers, Rejoice! New Brands To Enter India Under Free Trade Agreement

India’s burgeoning love affair with Scotch whisky is well-known. Scotch whisky entered the Indian scene during the British colonial era. The British influence brought not only the spirit itself but also the drinking culture that surrounded it. And now, in addition to helping increase Scotch whisky exports from the UK under a free trade agreement between New Delhi and London, customers here would also have more options.

The Indian whisky industry evolved in response to this changing landscape. The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) added that India’s proposed decrease in import duties is for good.  A free trade pact is being negotiated between India and the UK. Lowering import expenses, will also be advantageous to brands of India-made foreign Liquor (IMFL). Due to its tiny size in this country, the group also said that locally produced Indian whisky will face “very little” direct competition from imported Scotch whisky.

Bulk Scotch whisky shipments to India account for a sizable share of total exports, which only account for 24% of total exports. According to a statement by SWA, most Scotch whisky sold in India is bottled domestically.

Scotch whisky imports into India are now subject to a 150 per cent duty, a significant drop. Scotch whisky is the most traded liquor in the world, with 1.3 billion bottles consumed annually.

Scotch whisky offered something that resonated deeply with the Indian palate. Its diverse flavour profiles, ranging from smoky and peaty to sweet and fruity, catered to a wide spectrum of tastes. This adaptability made it suitable for various occasions, whether sipping it neat or crafting exquisite cocktails.

However, in recent times, Scotch whisky in India has faced its share of challenges. High import duties, complex regulations, and a competitive market mean that Scotch whisky remains a premium indulgence for many. However, the demand is showing no signs of slowing down, and whisky makers are continually adapting strategies to navigate these hurdles.

Additionally, Scotch whisky has become an integral part of Indian celebrations and social gatherings, where toasting with a glass of fine whisky is a symbol of camaraderie and joy.
