After 20 years, sea turtles were spotted at Versova Beach returning to our shoreline once again.
What Is It?
Olive Ridley turtles have returned to the shoreline of Mumbai’s Versova Beach after 20 whole years. It was once filled with drowning plastic waste, but ever since volunteers have worked towards keeping it clean, we have been noticing positive changes.
Due to regular clean up routines, over 80 hatchlings were spotted last week at Versova Beach. This is a wonderful moment for us and Versova residents swear to keep the beach cleaner than ever.

What Has Been Happening?
Back in 2015, a Versova resident spotted a plastic dump nearly 5.5 feet in height on the beach. That’s when the fight against the garbage began. Gathering the community, the residents have invested their weekends in clean up routines on 1.5 mile long stretch of the beach.
Soon, there were 1000 volunteers for this project and the UN declared this as the ‘largest beach clean-up program‘. The Versova Beach Clean-up Project was responsible to clear out 11 million pounds of garbage over a span of 21 months.
