Makarand Deshpande, Indian actor, writer, and director, recently recalled a moment when Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan drank chaas from a village without any hesitation during the shoot of a song from Swades. Speaking on the popular podcast, Cyrus Says by Cyrus Broacha, Deshpande also praised Khan for his generosity and kindness.
Makarand Deshpande Shares Anecdotes On Working With Shah Rukh Khan
In the recent episode of Cyrus Says, Makarand Deshpande spoke about reuniting with Shah Rukh Khan after 13 years for Swades, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. The two had last worked together on the TV show Circus. By the time they reunited for Swades, SRK had already risen to superstardom with millions of fans across the world.
Deshpande recalled that during the shoot, Gowariker was fresh off the success of Lagaan, Shah Rukh was a massive film star, and he had spent over a decade working in theatre. “It was like three people coming from three different worlds,” he said.

SRK’s Humble Gesture On Set
During the conversation, Makarand Deshpande not only shared nostalgic moments but also expressed deep admiration for Shah Rukh Khan. He revealed that despite not being in touch for years, Khan had kept track of his theatre work. Makarand Deshpande also shared how SRK generously agreed to help him with his small film, Shahrukh Bola Khoobsurat Hai Tu, when he needed a close-up shot. SRK had simply told him. “You don’t need to spend any money. Just send your cameraman, I’ll get the unit.”
He also recalled his cameo in the song Yun Hi Chala Chal, and the moment he offered Shah Rukh some chaas (buttermilk) he had brought from the village. “Usne bina kisi jhijak ke pee liya,” (He drank it without hesitation), he said. He also spoke about how King Khan had to do everything during the shoot of the song. From driving the caravan to talking on the walkie-talkie and more.
