Shashi Tharoor Laments Loss Of India Club, A 70-YO London Restaurant Set To Close In Sept

In case you missed it, one of the most iconic joints in London is closing after 72 long years. The joint is none other than India Club. It is a legendary institution with rich historical background. Operating as an Indian restaurant, India Club frequently witnessed Indian nationalists at the time of Independence. Shashi Tharoor was especially heartbroken at the loss as his father was one of the founders of India Club.

Since they announced their closure some time ago, many people have taken to social media to express the sadness they felt at the announcement. This particular institution was established more than 70 years ago in 1951. Since then, it has played host to many notable personalities.

Shashi Tharoor took to X, formerly Twitter, and lamented the loss of this institution. In his post, he described the role that his father, Chandran Tharoor played in founding India Club. He even donated a framed picture of his father to the restaurant which was placed on the wall.

He described India Club as a home away from home for journalists and students as well as travellers. He even recalled fondly when he last visited the place along with his sister.

Why Is The Restaurant Being Closed?

According to multiple reports, the landlords of the building have been trying for a long time to evict the historical restaurant from the building and it seems that they succeeded. Marston Properties, the firm responsible for evicting the restaurant, have revealed their designs.

According to an article published in The Telegraph India, they revealed in court that they plan on gutting the restaurant to make way for a posh new hotel. India Club is slated for closure in the following month of September.

If patrons still want to enjoy the place and all it offers, you can head there before the 17th of September, which will be its last day.
