Sikkim Grapples With Heavy Rainfall That Has Triggered Landslides; Blocks On National Highway 10

Sikkim is home to breathtaking natural beauty and opens its doors to the most beautiful travel experiences. All parts of this scenic state welcome visitors throughout the year. If you have plans to travel here soon, rethink your travel plans. Ongoing heavy rainfall in parts of Sikkim has triggered landslides in the last few days. The present conditions in affected regions look grim and improper to enjoy holidays.

Heavy Rainfall Creates Chaos In South Sikkim

It has been a few days since we have been reading news about incessant rain grappling different places in the state. Torrential rainfall wreaked major chaos triggering fresh landslides in several locations. It was on Wednesday, when a few regions in Sikkim reported about these landslides, according to a report by Hindustan Times. The down-slope movement of rocks and debris damaged a road. Till Wednesday evening, there was no news of residents or tourists losing their lives because of these landslides.

Before the recent ones, Sikkim was hit by severe landslides during the weekend. The disaster damaged properties and killed people in South Sikkim’s Majwa village. According to multiple reports, 3 people passed away in this village. Prem Singh Tamang, Sikkim Chief Minister, declared compensation for the family members of the deceased. Families of the 3 people who lost their lives will be compensated with ₹5 lakh each.

Taking to X, James Faraji (@withlovejames) shared a glimpse of the heartwrenching conditions of a village in Sikkim after getting hit by landslides.

National Highway 10 is a crucial road connecting Sikkim and West Bengal. It links the hilly state with the Kalimpong district. The landslides not only caused damage to this highway but obstructed it as well. The state authorities of Sikkim and West Bengal confirmed the recent updates. Among this intense chaos, the only good news is that no strong landslides hit Sikkim since Tuesday.

Weather Updates For The Next Few Days:

Weather predictions state that the state is likely to get intense rainfall in the next few days. India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted expectations of isolated heavy to very heavy with extremely heavy falls in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from June 11 to 13. The states are also likely to receive isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall on June 14. Thunderstorms are also highly expected in several regions till June 16.
