1. A Social Movement Saved The Valley
Back in the 1970s, a movement was initiated for the protection of Silent Valley. The major aim of this initiative was to oppose a hydroelectric project and save the forest from getting flooded due to this project. The Kerala Sastra Sahithya Parishad-led NGO conducted the movement.
2. Inaugurated In 1985
Former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi declared it as a National Park. He inaugurated the new national park on September 7, 1985.
3. Last Remaining Rain Forest In Kerala
Kerala is home to alluring rainforests. The state is famous for the most stunning Silent Valley nestled in the Western Ghats. According to the national park’s official website, this is the last remaining rainforest in the South Indian state. This stretch is also known as one of India’s largest dense forests.

4. Houses Over 290 Species Of Birds
According to the official website of Kerala Forest Department, Silent Valley National Park is home to 500 species of butterflies and moths, 292 species of birds, 34 species of mammals, 31 species of reptiles, 22 species of amphibians, 13 species of fishes, and more. Animals such as Barking Deer, Elephant, Lion Tailed Macaque, Mouse Deer, Nilgiri Langur, Porcupine, Otter, Ruddy Mongoose, Sambar, Sloth Bear, and Wild Boar are found here. The national park also houses reptiles such as King Cobra, Rufescent Burrowing Frog, Rat Snake, Viper, and more. Grey-headed Bulbul, Nilgiri Pipit, Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, and Rufous Bellied Shortwing are among the rich bird populations seen here.
5. Known For Adventurous Activities
A scenic trekking route stretches to Kunthi River. Trekkers often join on this short journey to witness the magnificence of the river and explore lush forests.
