If you’ve dreamt of skipping a layover and stepping straight off a plane onto Phuket’s sun-drenched shores from Mumbai, then we have good news. According to a report by AviatioA2Z.com, Thai VietJet Air is about to make this a reality. The low-cost carrier has announced it will launch direct flights between Phuket and Mumbai starting in August 2025, giving Indian travellers a fresh option to reach Thailand’s most famous island, without the Bangkok stopover shuffle.
A Direct Link: Phuket-Mumbai Route
Tapping into the rising demand, Thai VietJet Air’s Mumbai-Phuket flight will mark the entry of the second airline on this route. These direct flights will run four times a week, with departures from Phuket at 10:10 PM (local time), gliding into Mumbai around 1:05 AM IST. On the return journey, flights take off from Mumbai at 2:05 AM and land in Phuket at 8:20 AM (local time). The aircraft will be a workhorse Airbus A320-200, with 180 economy seats.

A Win For Indian Holidaymakers
For years, Phuket has been calling out to Indian holidaymakers. But getting there usually meant transiting through Bangkok or booking a pricey direct ticket with limited timings. IndiGo has been the main player offering direct links, but with little competition, fares often stayed stubbornly high. Thai VietJet stepping in is all set to change the equation.
What sets these flights apart, beyond the obvious convenience of skipping Bangkok, is their timing. The late-night departures work brilliantly for people who want to finish up work or pack in a full day before heading to the airport. And landing in the morning means you’re on the beach, cocktail in hand, before most of your friends back home have even stepped into the office. The four-times-a-week schedule also adds welcome flexibility.
Thai VietJet Air’s Move Signals A Bigger India Strategy
Of course, the Phuket-Mumbai direct flight isn’t Thai VietJet’s first foray into India. The airline already runs a daily Mumbai-Bangkok service, which was launched in December 2024. But this new Phuket link feels like a bolder play, a sign that Thai VietJet sees serious potential in connecting India’s financial capital with Thailand’s holiday hotspots directly. As Indian visitor numbers to Thailand keep climbing, destinations like Phuket, with their promise of easy luxury and beachside relaxation, are at the top of many travellers’ wish lists.
The move also stirs up the competitive landscape. With Air India, Thai Airways, and IndiGo already in competition (though mostly via Bangkok), Thai VietJet’s direct, budget-friendly option is likely to shake things up. It forces the bigger players to think about pricing and routes, and that can only be good news for travellers.
