Mumbai is home to an iconic structure formed from molten lava. About 66 million years back, a huge monolith column of black basalt rock was formed in an area that is now known as Andheri. Known as Gilbert Hill, the rock developed itself during the Mesozoic Era from molten lava. And now, there are plans to establish it as a tourist attraction. Here’s all you need to know about the concerned authorities’ plans to develop this black basalt rock.

Have you been to Dubai? Even if you have not travelled to this foreign destination yet, you still have heard about the grandeur of Burj Khalifa and all its extravagant and iconic tourism experiences. And now, the Maharashtra government is also thinking of similar plans to transform the ancient Gilbert Hill and develop it on similar lines to the world-famous Burj Khalifa, according to a report by The Indian Express.

Mangal Prabhat Lodha is the Guardian Minister of Mumbai (suburbs) and he shared how the Maharashtra government is planning to take this significant step and revamp Gilbert Hill into something huge and travelworthy. The opening event of the new swimming pool at Gilbert Hill was conducted yesterday. During this event, Mangal Prabhat Lodha talked about developing the hill into a tourist spot.

The proposal to establish the hill and build it into something iconic includes different redevelopment ideas. During the inauguration event on Sunday, the Minister also talked about the plan to add an elevator. The Public Works Department will work on installing this elevator and its primary purpose will be to carry all the visitors coming to the temple located at the top of Gilbert Hill. The Indian Express report also stated that the project to redevelop everything will take about a year.

The 66 million-year-old hill in Andheri is a Grade II heritage structure. Currently, both the base and the cliff are quite risky and vulnerable to landslides.
