Tibetan people bestowed the title ‘Dalai Lama’ to the first spiritual leader of Gelug of Tibetan Buddhism. Currently, Tenzin Gyatso, also known as Gyalwa Rinpoche, is the 14th Dalai Lama — the highest spiritual leader of Tibet. Recently, he was spotted flying on a SpiceJet flight. Here’s what the airline tweeted after spotting him.

On Friday, SpiceJet tweeted a pic of the 14th Dalai Lama with their employee. According to the tweet, they were blessed to have His Holiness travel with them. The image was one of their ‘SpiceJet travel diaries’. And His Holiness was probably travelling to Delhi.
For those who aren’t aware, the 14th Dalai Lama is the highest and most respected spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism. He is regarded as a living Bodhisattva, specifically an incarnation of Chenrezig in Tibetan and Avalokitevara in Sanskrit. In addition, he is the head and a monk of the Gelug school, the most recent branch of Tibetan Buddhism that was previously led by the Ganden Tripa. The Dalai Lama was given temporal responsibilities by Tibet’s Ganden Phodrang until his exile in 1959.

His Holiness’ Travel Diaries
In 1954, the 14th Dalai Lama travelled outside of Tibet for the first time and spent nearly a year in China. There, he spoke with political figures and visited several locations. His Holiness travelled to India for the second time in 1956. The Mahabodhi Society of India invited him to take part in the celebrations marking the 2500th anniversary of the birth of Lord Buddha. His Holiness made another trip to India in 1959, but this time he did so as a refugee, fleeing the harsh Chinese conquest of Tibet and beginning his exile.
He made numerous trips inside India to meet the refugees and their newly constructed camps since the rehabilitation of tens of thousands of Tibetan refugees in India during the first years of exile was a priority. Also, His Holiness travelled to Thailand and Japan in 1967 for his first international trips since going into exile. Most importantly, he undertook his first trip to the West in 1973, travelling to 12 different nations in Europe in a record-breaking 75 days!

In 1979, he paid his first visits to the Americas in the United States and Canada.
