The importance of turtles in an ecosystem is not lost. Recently, a Sri Lankan beach witnessed a number of dead turtles being washed ashore. The authorities are probing into the matter. Many reports suggest that an underwater explosion might be to blame. This particular news has left the authorities in a tizzy. A post-mortem report will be done to ascertain the cause of death. In a tragic turn of recent events, a beach stretched between the Kalutara and Negombo regions in Sri Lanka has been witnessing dead turtles being washed ashore. Over the course of three days, close to 20 dead turtles have washed up.

These turtles are all of the same species. It is speculated that an underwater explosion is responsible for their deaths. Not much is known about the nature of the explosion so far. However, according to an article recently published in The Print, the Wildlife Department is investigating the matter thoroughly.

As per the officials from the Department of Wildlife Conservation, the dead turtles have been found at the Induruwa, Kapungoda, and Muthurajawela Marsh as well as the Pamunugama sea areas. Post-mortem will be performed on the turtles to understand the cause of death.

Investigations About The Incident Underway

According to the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency, abbreviated as NARA, found that the turtles found dead were all of the same species and sizes. It was also stated that in addition to thoroughly examining the bodies, officials will also take samples of the water around which the bodies were found.

The water will be tested to see if it reveals any potential information about the cause of death of the turtles. Turtles are crucial in maintaining the aquatic ecosystem. Among other things, they are responsible for maintaining coral reefs which also play a crucial role in supporting aquatic ecosystems.
