Sri Lanka’s Anuradhapura: The Sacred City That PM Modi Is To Visit Holds A Spiritual Identity

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting the holy city of Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka on April 4, 2025, on a two-day official visit. The ancient city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited places. It is a sacred centre of Theravada Buddhism, home to sacred relics, ancient monasteries, and the legendary Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree. The visit will be a milestone in consolidating the diplomatic relations between the two neighbouring countries. PM Modi will be the first world leader to be welcomed by newly elected Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

PM Modi’s visit to Anuradhapura will bring global attention to this sacred city, which is a cornerstone of Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage. Established in the 4th century BCE, it served as the first capital of Sri Lanka for over a thousand years. It is home to some of the most significant Buddhist monuments, including the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree, believed to be the oldest living tree with a recorded history.

This sacred tree is said to have grown from a cutting of the original Bodhi tree in India under which Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment over 2,500 years ago. It is worshipped as a symbol of spiritual awakening and national pride by Sri Lanka’s 22 million-strong Buddhist population.

Additionally, the city also has grand stupas such as Ruwanwelisaya and Jetavanaramaya, two of the tallest ancient structures in the world. The prime minister’s visit will also include the inauguration of Indian government-supported railway projects, enhancing connectivity between heritage cities such as Jaffna and Kandy.

Beyond the cultural aspect, PM Modi’s visit to Anuradhapura highlights India’s commitment to Sri Lanka’s development. India has been a key country in helping Sri Lanka’s economy, especially in the aftermath of its financial crisis. The discussions during the visit are expected to focus on economic aid, infrastructure development, and furthering bilateral relations. This visit will also reinforce the shared cultural and religious connections between the two nations.

The historical link between India and Sri Lanka through Buddhism is a bridge of peace and cooperation, and Modi’s visit to Anuradhapura will be a powerful gesture. His visit is not purely diplomatic; it is a celebration of the common heritage of Sri Lanka and India. As the world turns its attention to Anuradhapura, millions are inspired by its rich history as a spiritual and cultural landmark.
