The World Crafts Council has officially recognised Srinagar as a ‘World Craft City’. Seeing how the beautiful Indian city met all the evaluation criteria set for the World Craft City programme, the certificate was issued on June 23. Jammu & Kashmir authorities believe this recognition will boost the handloom and handicraft sector in the region and in turn, help increase tourism and infrastructure development in the area.

Srinagar Recognised As ‘World Craft City’

The World Crafts Council AISBL was founded in 1964 with an aim to promote artisans around the world. It is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation affiliated with UNESCO. They work in Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America, and North American countries. And now, they have recognised Srinagar as a ‘World Craft City.’

The Information & PR Department of the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir took to their X (formerly Twitter) account to share the certification. In the post, they said that this prestigious honour highlights Srinagar’s “heritage and the exceptional skills of its artisans.”

The post also featured Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha commenting on this recognition. He said, “ This recognition is a testament to the hard work and exceptional talent of our artisans. It validates their dedication and highlights the cultural richness of Srinagar. We are committed to supporting our artisans and ensuring that this accolade translates into tangible benefits for the community.”

As per a report in NDTV, J&K authorities believe that this recognition will have a great impact on the handloom and handicraft sector. It will help foster growth, sustainability, and innovation in the city. Furthermore, they also expressed that with increased global recognition, Srinagar’s crafts will open up new markets and opportunities for artisans, and even benefit tourism and infrastructure development in the region. Furthermore, as per J&K’s Department of Handicraft and Handloom, tourism in Srinagar will benefit from this recognition and more tourists will visit the city.

Srinagar and the local artists in the city truly deserve this great honour. We hope more talents around the country get recognition on such a global level.
