The Indian Meteorological Department has indicated a low-pressure region forming over the Bay of Bengal and is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm next week. Cyclone Asani (as named by Sri Lanka) is likely to hit Andaman and Nicobar islands on March 21, 2022. The weather forecast experts say that the storm will not cause any harm in India as it might not touch the Indian coast.
Cyclone walks in early this year after two decades.
April and May are generally known as pre-monsoon months and the cyclonic disturbances begin in the month of May. But the disturbances have occurred too early in 2022, giving rise to the first cyclone of the year, Cyclone Asani. It was nearly 130 years ago that a cyclone had hit the Indian Ocean.
Cyclone might march towards Bangladesh and Myanmar.
The low-pressure area on the south-east Bay of Bengal will strengthen into a well-marked one on Saturday. This might cause heavy rainfall on Andaman and Nicobar islands for 2 days. The system will intensify into a cyclonic storm by Monday. The storm will march north, northwest towards Bangladesh and Mynamar on March 23.
Asani, Wrath in Sinhala
As the system intensifies, it will be named Asani, which is a name given by Sri Lanka. In Sinhala the word Asani means wrath.
Forecasts and Warnings Issued By Weather Office
As per the forecasts, the cyclone might not hit the Indian coast. But it all depends on how intense the cyclone might turn into. Odisha, West Bengal and northeastern states are expected to receive heavy to very heavy and strong winds. The weather office has issued strict warnings to fishermen to not venture along the eastern coast of India.
