With strong winds, heavy rain, and snow, Storm Bert has brought the UK to a standstill. Some areas have reported torrential rainfall of 130 mm in the last 24 hours and this has disrupted road, rail, air, and ferry services in many areas. As per reports, National Severe Weather Warnings are still in place across the UK due to the storm.
Storm Bert Claims 4 Lives In UK, Flood Warnings Still In Place
According to Sky News, 250 flood warnings and alerts were issued across the UK after Storm Bert hit the region over the weekend. Continuous downpours have resulted in flooded streets and road closures in areas like Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall, and Wolverhampton.
Storm Bert has claimed four lives across the UK so far. An elderly man, in his 80s, died after his car plunged into a river in the middle of the storm. Two other men passed away in a car accident near Winchester. The fourth man also died while driving when his car hit a brick wall in West Yorkshire.
According to reports, 10 areas in Wales have been placed under boil water notices. These notices are typically issued when an unexpected condition that can potentially cause biological contamination of water in a public water system arises. Authorities in Wales fear that Storm Bert can cause such contamination.
Power Cuts & Disruption Of Transportation In Many Areas
Storm Bert left hundreds of homes across the East of England without power. Other areas in the UK also experienced power over the weekend. Some of the worst affected areas were Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, and Suffolk. According to a BBC report, the UK Power Networks is working to restore electricity after this massive power outage.
The storm’s strong winds have also disrupted railway services across East and West Sussex, London, and Wales. Several train services in the region were even suspended due to water logging, fallen trees on the tracks, and strong winds.
Storm Bert also impacted air travel. Reportedly, hundreds of flights were cancelled at airports across the United Kingdom over the weekend. At London’s Heathrow Airport, average arrival delays of 78 minutes and average departure delays of 46 minutes were noted over the weekend.
