Air India passengers flying to Europe or the UK now have to pay a higher price to check in a second bag. According to The Economic Times, this change has been effective since October 17. The airline has now introduced different fare ‘families’.

As per reports, the lowest economy fare, also called the ‘value fare’, offers one checked bag of up to 23 kg for these routes. Now, if you wish to check in two bags, then you will need to choose a higher fare class. The price difference for this fare class starts at about ₹4,000 for a one-way ticket.

It is to be noted that Air India reduced the baggage allowance for the lowest economy fare from 25 kg to 15 kg on its domestic routes as well. The airline was famous for offering higher baggage allowance but earlier this year they changed this policy to be in line with other domestic airlines.

With this new baggage policy, Air India now aligns with international carriers like Lufthansa and British Airways. As per The Economic Times, Lufthansa allows one check-in bag for economy flyers. Passengers have to pay extra charges to check in the second bag. As for British Airways, the economy fare allows only a handbag and higher economy fare levels allow two bags of up to 23 kg each.
