Study Reveals Indians Are Second Most Sleep-Deprived And Least Active In The World

It’s common knowledge that Indians are generally termed to be hard workers. Now the latest study conducted by Fitbit reveals that Indians are the second most sleep-deprived and least active among 18 countries which includes Singapore, the UK and the USA. The study has further state that Indians walk an average of only 6,533 steps daily. These statistics were revealed in a report by the fitness solutions firm Fitbit. So maybe all work, no sleep and no play can make Jack a dull boy.

What Does The Study Say?

According to the data generated Indians are the least active and walk only 6533 steps daily, which is the least among all 18 countries. The most active country in the world, Hong Kong logs in a daily average of 3600 steps more than India. The average active minutes of Indians, seem to be the lowest in the grid.

With an average sleep of seven hours and one minute, the studies state that Indians are the second most sleep-deprived nation in the world after Japan. The report suggests that Indians clock in 48 minutes lesser than the nightly sleep in the UK and 32 minutes lesser than that of Americans. When it comes to the country that sleeps the most, Ireland clocked in an average of 7 hours and 57 minutes of sleep, which is the highest among the 18 countries.

For those of you don’t know, Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep is crucial because it nurtures brain regions which are used for learning. It is an essential aspect of memory, emotion regulation and the peak stage of protein synthesis at the cellular level. It ensures that multiple processes in the body function properly. India generates the lowest REM sleep similar to people in Japan. Both countries clock only 77 minutes of REM sleep. Another interesting note in the Fitbit report found that Indians in the age group of 75 to 90 years got the lowest sleep of just 6 hours 35 minutes on an average. And even though Indians adults in the age group of 18 to 25 years go to bed an hour earlier than the older age group, they still clock in relatively longer sleep hours. Now that we know where India stands when it comes to sleep and exercise, maybe its time we introduce some fitness and better sleep in our lives.
