India’s first ‘Writer’s Village,’ Lekhak Gaon, has officially opened in the serene, lush green landscapes of Thano, on the outskirts of Dehradun. Inaugurated by former President Ram Nath Kovind, alongside Uttarakhand Governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, and Censor Board chairman Prasoon Joshi, this unique space is all set to become a haven for writers, poets, and artists from across the globe.

Spread across 25 acres, Lekhak Gaon is a dream brought to life by former Uttarakhand CM Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank. He was inspired by the late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s lament about the lack of respect and space for writers in the country. This visionary project is designed to give writers the peace, beauty, and environment they need to create.
According to the Times of India reports, the village features a main building, a library, a museum, and cosy writers’ cottages, all built in traditional Pahadi architectural style with deodar wood doors and hill stone slabs. The bhojanalaya, or dining hall, adds a local touch, serving traditional Uttarakhandi dishes, and giving writers a taste of the region’s rich culture.
For the literary community, this village provides a supportive and immersive environment. It is a place where authors can get inspiration from the stunning Himalayan landscape and spend time in nature. Lekhak Gaon offers all writers a creative atmosphere and a space that values literary talent from around the world. More than 40 countries participated in the Sparsh Himalaya Mahotsav, a significant event that marked the village’s inauguration, the Times of India reported.

Lekhak Gaon is India’s first-ever concept of its kind, offering a solution to the practical challenges faced by writers. It provides the writers with not just physical space but a community that celebrates literature, art, and culture. The village also honours the Himalayas, a source of inspiration for poets and authors.
Lekhak Gaon wants to become a more global platform for literary, cultural, and artistic collaboration in the future. Through programmes such as the Sparsh Himalaya Abhiyan, the village will continue to support the preservation of the region’s priceless traditions and the Himalayan philosophy.
Now, writers and artists have a special place that nourishes creativity as well as tradition.
