Sydney Floods: Disaster Assistance Activated As Flood Threat Continues To Loom Over NSW

Australia’s New South Wales received extremely heavy rainfall on April 5, Friday. As a result of this heavy rainfall, Sydney is now witnessing flash floods. If reports are to go by, the region received close to a month’s rainfall in just 24 hours! Authorities have issued evacuation orders and disaster assistance efforts and rescue operations are underway as of now. One fatality has been recorded so far. Here are all of the other important details that you would need to know about these floodings in Australia.

Sydney Floods: Disaster Assistance Activated In NSW For Floods

According to an article which was recently published by The Guardian, the government of New South Wales or NSW has commenced disaster assistance measures after the heavy rainfall on Friday triggered floods in the region.

The heavy rainfall caused the flooding in the Hawkesbury-Nepean River catchment area. Authorities subsequently took the decision to open the spill gates of the Warragamba Dam. For now, blue skies have re-emerged in Sydney.

However, authorities have mentioned that the threat of flood is not over yet. One fatality so far has been reported in the floods. Rescue operations and disaster assistance are still underway.

Evacuation Orders Issued To 350 Homes With 950 Residents

According to Reuters, Sydney received 111 millimetres of rainfall in a little over 24 hours. This is almost as much rain as the region gets in an entire month which is around 121 millimetres.

Evacuation orders have been issued in regions like the western Richmond Lowlands, Agnes Bank, Freemans Reach and the North of Bligh Park. More than 350 homes with more than 950 residents will be evacuated owing to the flood warnings.

The State Emergency Services got as many as 4,128 emergency calls for help in just 24 hours owing to these floods. Around 152 people were rescued from the floodwaters in NSW.
