At Bengaluru Airport’s T2 (Terminal 2), vertical gardens and lush green planters galore. A fitting welcome to travellers, the airport perfectly captures the essence of the ‘Garden City’. Rife with 15,000 plants across 153 species many native to the Western Ghats, T2 at Bengaluru Airport now has Tiger Wings, a larger-than-life vertical garden installation by world-renowned botanist Patrick Blanc. Here’s all about it.
Tiger Wings At Bengaluru Airport’s T2 Is A Harmony Of Nature & Infrastructure
Globally acclaimed botanist Patrick Blanc recently unveiled his largest project in India at Bengaluru Airport’s T2. Spanning 160 feet in width and 30 feet in height, Tiger Wings is a vertical garden installation that perfectly blends nature with infrastructure.
Two walls of the international terminal is a living garden, home to over 15,000 plants across 153 species. Many of these plants are native to the Western Ghats and Karnataka. The botanist explored several forests in the Western Ghats to handpick the plant species, ensuring they were native to the region. Rare plant species were carefully selected from these diverse ecosystems.
With a soilless system imported from Germany, the vertical garden represents India’s national animal, the Tiger. It covers 4000 square feet. The Tiger Wings installation uses asparagus plants to trace the silhouette of aeroplane wings. The white Ixora flowers, and vibrant orange, yellow and red flowers represent the tiger’s distinct stripes.
Patrick Blanc’s Creation Has 15,000 Plants From Western Ghats
The new installation at T2 is highly water-efficient. Blanc has integrated a sustainable irrigation system that delivers just the right amount of water to the plants across layers. It’s similar to how plants grow on natural cliffs like the Western Ghats. Moreover, his hydroponic approach allows diverse groups of plant species to coexist in compact spaces. Tiger Wings, not just makes the environment breathtaking, but a cooler one as well.
In a press statement, Patrick Blanc called Tiger Wings, a realisation of a dream where nature and architecture coexist seamlessly. Hari Marar, Managing Director & CEO of Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) also echoed his words. He called the installation a reflection of their vision to harmonise nature with infrastructure. A bid to showcase the true spirit of Bengaluru.
Well, fellow Bengalureans, are you excited to see Tiger Wings at T2?
