Located in the Western Ghats near Pune, the Tamhini Wildlife Sanctuary is a biodiversity hotspot, home to a wide range of plant and animal species. However, unchecked tourism and human activities have caused ecological stress in the region. To address these issues, the Maharashtra Forest Department has teamed up with Microsoft and AERF to roll out a strategic eco-restoration plan.

According to The Indian Express, the plan involves identifying degraded patches within the sanctuary and restoring them by planting native species. The forest department will provide regulatory support, while AERF will lead field-level interventions, including habitat restoration and removal of invasive species. Microsoft will contribute by offering technological support to monitor and assess the health of the ecosystem.

Community Involvement And Sustainable Livelihood

An important element of the eco-restoration plan is local community engagement. As reported by The Indian Express, the initiative will offer training to local residents to help them participate in conservation and eco-tourism activities. This will include roles such as eco-guides, local conservation ambassadors, and homestay hosts, allowing them to earn a sustainable livelihood while supporting the sanctuary’s restoration.

By involving the local population, the project aims to build long-term ecological awareness and ownership, which is essential for the sanctuary’s protection. These efforts also aim to balance environmental conservation with economic benefits for communities living near the sanctuary.

Technology Meets Ecology

Microsoft’s role in the project is to integrate technology into the eco-restoration process. According to The Indian Express, the company will use artificial intelligence and data analytics tools to track biodiversity, monitor forest cover, and assess restoration outcomes. This data-driven approach will help stakeholders make informed decisions and respond quickly to environmental changes.
