A crucial infrastructure project is set to commence in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu as the Highways Department prepares estimates for a new bridge across the Palar River at Sevilimedu. The proposed structure, which will run parallel to an existing bridge on the Kancheepuram-Vandavasi State Highway 116, aims to ease traffic congestion and enhance connectivity to key areas including Walajahbad, Oragadam, Padappai and Vandalur. Here are all of the other important details that you would need to know about this new bridge.
Tamil Nadu: New 900-Metre Bridge To Be Constructed In Sevilimedu
According to an article which was recently published by The Hindu, this particular bridge will stretch across 900 metres. It will match the existing structure’s two-lane width, creating a coordinated traffic flow system. There, each bridge will handle traffic in opposite directions.
With an estimated cost of ₹100 crore and a projected construction timeline of 18 months, this development represents a significant investment in the region’s infrastructure. Local residents have long advocated for such improvements, citing daily traffic snarls and environmental concerns.
Chitra Sankar, a Sevilimedu resident cited in The Hindu article, highlighted the challenges faced by commuters. She particularly noted the heavy presence of trucks transporting blue metal from nearby quarries. These vehicles not only cause significant delays—with waiting times sometimes exceeding 20 minutes—but also contribute to air pollution through dust emissions.

Other Important Details To Know About This Project
The project’s scope extends beyond the main bridge construction. The Highways Department will also restore an existing causeway across the Palar River, which serves as a vital link for residents accessing facilities for last rites.
Additionally, the road surface will undergo renovation work to ensure comprehensive infrastructure improvement. Local political support for the project is evident. The existing bridge, constructed 25 years ago, has struggled to cope with increasing traffic volumes.
This is primarily due to industrial development in surrounding areas. This new infrastructure project thus represents a timely response to the growing needs of the region’s expanding commercial and residential communities.
