If you’re planning on taking a trip to witness the natural splendour of the Nilgiris, this update may be relevant for you. The mandate requiring tourists as well as private vehicles to obtain an e-pass before visiting the Nilgiris has been extended for another couple of months. This is being done to regulate tourist traffic. Here are all of the other important details that you would need to know about this recent update.
E-Pass Requirement For Tourist Vehicles Extended Till Aug 30
According to an article which was recently published by Mathrubhumi, the extension has been issued by the district administration. Tourists entering the Nilgiris in a private vehicle require an e-pass to do so. This mandate was passed earlier by the Madras High Court.
This mandate is put into place with the aim of regulating tourist traffic at the spot. The Nilgiris is a famous tourist destination and scores of people from around the country come from far and wide to witness its natural beauty.
Hence, in order to preserve its beauty and curb over-tourism, the government has put this measure in place. The requirement has been extended for the next two months till August 30, 2024.
Mandate Not Extended For Local Vehicles And Bus Travellers
It is important to note, however, that the mandate is no longer applicable to the vehicles of the residents of the area. Moreover, tourists travelling via buses will also not require the e-pass. As of now, there are no restrictions on tourists.
However, to keep a check on tourists in Kodaikanal and Ooty, this move was deemed necessary. The process is further streamlined after the checkpoints are also authorised to issue passes to vehicles after checking vehicle history.
The checkpoints conduct stringent checks of vehicles in order to ensure that the mandates are complied with.
