Along with the superstructure of the memorial for late DMK leader and former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi that is currently being built on the Marina, the Tamil Nadu government has proposed building a museum on more than 1500 square metres and spread over 160 cents. It will be partially underground.

Karunanidhi Memorial Will Have An Underground Museum

To enter the underground space, visitors might need to use a ramp. According to the information gathered, 2,000 square metres would need to be constructed if the project were to be approved. It’s anticipated that the price will increase by another  80 lakhs. A museum had been suggested before, though it was only supposed to occupy about 40 cents of space.

The goal right now is to increase it to about 160 cents. The memorial’s main pavilion will be direct across from the main entrance of the museum, which will be located on land.

There are also plans to instal laser illumination to display messages honouring Tamil and Tamil Nadu at the pen memorial. The Karunanidhi memorial is being constructed on Marina Beach as part of a 39-crore project.

The Design Is In The Works

The government is already working on a design for a monument that will be built on land 360 metres into the Bay of Bengal, standing 42 metres tall. It is estimated to cost 80 crores to construct.

The Karunanidhi memorial, which is being constructed on the mainland, will also feature ponds, galleries, pavilions, landscaping, and if the new proposal is approved, an underground museum. It will also have an open-air theatre with seating.

The memorial is situated in Anna Square, close to the cemeteries of other previous chief ministers Jayalalithaa, C.N. Annadurai, and M.G. Ramachandran, on the Marina beach.

It has been over a year since the Tamil Nadu State Coastal Zone Management Authority (TNSCZMA) approved the construction of the Karunanidhi memorial on Marina Beach. 160 cents of the approved structure will include green belts, four ponds, a toilet block, two galleries, pump rooms, and a pavilion.

Additionally, the proposed open-air theatre is said to have a ramp, a stage, a museum and a seating area.
