Thailand Might Postpone Opening For Vaccinated Travellers Amid Surge In Covid Cases

Phuket was all set to welcome the vaccinated travellers from July 1 under the Phuket Sandbox initiative- however, Thailand is now considering pushing back the reopening of Phuket. The country is considering this amid the sudden surge in the cases. Read on to know more about it.

Thailand Is Recording 1,500 Cases Daily Which Is The Highest Spike Ever

According to Bangkok Post, Thailand’s tourism ministry is considering pushing the date of Phuket’s tourism reopening. The country has seen the highest spike ever, with over 1,500 cases daily. And this is a tremendous number for Thailand as it was very successful in handling the two waves of covid successful. At present, Thailand has recorded 42,352 cases and 101 deaths.

The cases might seem marginally low as per the International standards, but it’s a huge cause of concern in the country. Not only the cases- but the slow vaccine roll-out is also adding more tension in the country. Amid all this, the nation had planned to vaccinate 70 per cent of Phuket’s population- however, with rising cases, the limited supply will now be distributed to other provinces as well. 

The Government Will Take A Final Call On Phuket’s Reopening Next Week

On this, Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, to a leading daily, said

“We are concerned about the reopening timeline. We still need to discuss the vaccine administration plan. If the herd immunity goal cannot be achieved, we may have to consider opening only certain areas in Phuket.”
