Total lockdown, social distancing, sanitising all surfaces, putting on a mask every time we stepped outside–this had become almost normal five years ago. After a long fight, we believed that COVID-19 is out of our lives for good but looks like that’s not the case. There has been a fresh rise in COVID-19 cases in Asian countries like Singapore, Thailand, and Hong Kong. These regions have reported fresh waves of infection. So, is it safe to travel there right now?
Asian Countries Report Surge In COVID-19 Cases
According to News18, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, and Thailand have reported a surge in COVID-19 cases recently. Singapore reported a massive 28% rise in COVID-19 cases. The country is on high alert as the estimated number of cases rose to 14,200 in the week ending May 3, up from 11,100 the previous week. Furthermore, daily hospitalisations also went up by almost 30%.
Hong Kong recorded 81 severe cases recently. In the week ending May 3, 31 deaths were reported—the highest in a year. Most of these were elderly people with underlying health conditions. The surge has also fueled concerns that a new COVID-19 variant is emerging amid the sudden surge in cases.
Cases in China have also spiked, almost nearing the peak levels seen during the viral wave last year. Local authorities have reported that testing positivity rates have more than doubled in recent weeks. Thailand’s Department of Disease Control has reported two cluster outbreaks this year. They noted a surge in cases after the Songkran festival in April.
