Thailand To Give 1 Million Free Cannabis Plants To Households As Crops

Believe it or not, the Thailand Government is giving away 1 million free cannabis plants in Thai households to grow for medicinal purposes. In a significant move, Thailand gave the green light to grow cannabis at home as ‘household crops’. But that does not mean anyone can grow cannabis. The growers will have to obtain special permission from the local government in order to start growing cannabis plants or even sell them. The free cannabis plant distribution plan is a part of their move to make cannabis a cash crop. However, licenses will have to be procured by the businesses for the commercial growing of cannabis.

Can Registered Thai Companies Sell Cannabis?

Thailand Health Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul announced on a Facebook post that the cannabis products with less than 0.2 tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, which gets people high, could be sold.

How Will Thailand Benefit From This?

Other than a significant impact on people’s health, the government and people will earn up to 10 billion baht per year as revenue from cannabis.

Who Can Consume The Cannabis?

You must be wondering that all Thai people can consume grow cannabis, consume and have a gala time at home. However, that is not true. In order for the Thai people to have a cannabis plant at home, it is mandatory they have a legal prescription and/or have an ailment or disease that requires for them to consume cannabis as medicines. The cannabis are strictly not meant for any recreational purposes.

Thailand 1st To Legalise Cannabis

It was Thailand that legalised the use of cannabis for medicinal and research purposes in 2018. It is also the first country in Southeast Asia to do so.
