Different people have different views on the war on drugs. While some are of the opinion that legalising drugs is the way forward, others believe that such a move is much too radical and might lead to uninhibited harm. In case you didn’t know, Thailand’s weed laws are relatively more progressive as compared to other Asian countries. Japan and China, for instance, have quite strict laws on the consumption of marijuana.

Recently, an article was published by the Hindustan Times which spoke of Asian tourists in Thailand, for whom, the primary draw is the country’s lenient cannabis policy. In case you didn’t know, in 2018, Thailand decriminalised marijuana for medical use.

Since then multiple licensed dispensaries have popped up. The article talked about how a total of 6,000 licenses for dispensing marijuana have been approved in February. Of these, 1,600 are in Bangkok. Thailand is unique in its leniency in cannabis laws.

Both China and Japan and strict punishments in place for those who are found guilty of consuming the drug. These punishments extend to those who visit foreign countries as well.

If nationals of these countries, upon returning home, are discovered to have engaged in its consumption, they will be met with the same punishment as those who consume it within the country.

Weed Policy In India

Even India has quite strict laws against the consumption of marijuana. In case you weren’t aware, as per Section 20 of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropics Substance Act or the NDPS Act, possession of weed is punishable by a fine of ₹10,000. Further, you can land in jail for up to six months.

The debate of whether weed should be legalised is longstanding. Proponents argue that it doesn’t cause harmful side effects and helps in relaxing so it should be legalised. People who are against the legalisation of the drug argue that it may be a gateway drug and may doom individuals to a life of drug addiction.
