The Gili Islands Offer Underwater Marvels, From Sculptures To Coral Wonderlands

If you’re a marine lover—or even if you’re not—this experience is sure to change your mind, just as it did for me. I’ve always felt comfortable in the water. I’ve been a swimmer since I was five, so water has always felt like home to me. But despite all those years in the pool, I’d never really thought about life thriving just beneath the surface. Do we call it magnificent, surreal, or overwhelming? No word quite does it justice—but let’s begin with beautiful.

Snorkelling At The Gili Islands

We visited the Indonesian Gili Islands in February—right in the middle of the rainy season. However, luck was on our side: the skies cleared, and the sun came out. The snorkelling trip begins from Gili Trawangan. The boat’s first stop is the marvellous and renowned underwater sculpture, The BASK Nest. The sculpture is designed by Jason deCaires Taylor and gifted to the local community by Gili Meno. This man-made installation features 48 life-sized statues: embracing couples, surrounding figures curled up on the seabed.

These sculptures seem to invite you in for a closer look, but as you approach, you might feel compelled to pause. Often described as “hauntingly beautiful”, the statues are bathed in crystal-clear waters that highlight every intricate detail. What’s even more fascinating is that these statues aren’t just a visual delight for humans. The BASK nest serves as a habitat for corals and marine life. Made with eco-friendly materials, the installation supports underwater biodiversity while offering a mesmerising sight.

Next, the boat heads to a turtle hotspot in Gili Trawangan, aptly called Turtle Paradise by all those who have visited—and it truly lives up to its name. As you swim through the water, glance down to spot a turtle dozing or perhaps gazing right back at you. If you’re lucky, you might even witness a turtle swimming gracefully towards the surface, sunlight streaming through the water to illuminate the scene. The vision is something straight out of a nature documentary. Among the species you may encounter are green Turtles, Hawksbill Turtles, and Loggerheads. Remember to observe responsibly; do not touch or disturb marine life.

The final stop is a vibrant coral paradise in Gili Air, bursting with colours as if straight out of a tropical garden. From vivid orange and pink soft corals to hardy table corals and other rare formations, the underwater landscape is nothing short of spectacular. Swimming through, you will spot a variety of marine creatures—surgeonfish, butterflyfish, and clownfish. If you’re observant, you might notice lobsters in brilliant hues or moray eels peeking from crevices. For the adventurous, diving deeper may reward you with sightings of reef sharks and manta rays gliding silently in the depths.

CT Tip:

The Gili Islands can experience strong currents and high tides, so while snorkelling and diving remain possible, never underestimate the power of the sea. Exploring the waters of the Gili is an unforgettable way to connect with marine life and discover the incredible beauty hidden beneath the surface.

How To Reach:

  • Fly to Bali or Lombok. From there, you can take a ferry or speedboat to Gili Trawangan.
  • Since there are no cars on Gili Trawangan, you’ll likely need to carry your luggage on foot, by bicycle, or by horse and cart.
