Can Double Masking Give You Better Protection During Travels? Here’s What You Need To Know

As India fights the more transmissible variants of COVID-19, there is a lot of confusion about the precautions to take to prevent getting infected with the virus. And while double masking is making news, can wearing two masks  help in protecting you from the virus? The truth is, there is no data that says that double masking is necessary to prevent the virus as long as you are wearing a single mask that fits and is made of at least two layers of fabric.

Doubling Up Your Mask Not A Necessity

The CDC does not recommend wearing two masks and nor does it say that you must wear an N95 mask. The only thing important is to wear a properly fitted mask. In a world where many people wear masks improperly, it may be tempting to double up your protection especially when you are travelling and there is a lack of social distancing. But all you need is a properly worn mask that completely covers your nose and mouth.

Right Way To Wear A Mask While Travelling

Most airports and airlines lack important COVID protection measures like social distancing. So if you are getting on a plane be sure that you have high protection in addition to your layered mask. Wear a face shield along with a double-layer cloth mask with a metal bar in the nose that has no gaps. If your mask doesn’t fit properly, be sure that you tighten the ear loops. While an N95 mask is your best bet, if you are wearing a cloth mask, be sure that it has two layers of tightly woven breathable fabric. The fabric should not let light pass through when held up to a light source.
