There’s A Heatwave In Spain Causing Severe Drought Throughout The Country; Here What To Expect

Drought and heatwaves are recurrent environmental challenges faced by Spain. These natural phenomena, defined by long periods of little to no rainfall and exceptionally high temperatures, have significant impacts on the country’s ecosystems. And, this year is no different for the country.

Spain Grapples With Drought Amidst Extreme Heatwaves

Spain’s geographical location, with its Mediterranean climate and proximity to desert regions, makes it particularly vulnerable to these extreme weather events. The combination of reduced water availability and scorching heat threatens agricultural productivity.

This also puts immense pressure on water resources and increases the risk of wildfires The national weather forecasting agency of Spain, Aemet, has issued an “extreme risk” alert for Andalusia in the southern region, reports Hindustan Times

In Catalonia, the combination of intense heat and extremely low rainfall has resulted in a critical situation for reservoirs, which are at a mere 30% of their capacity. This figure falls below the average water level of 46.5% for the entire country of Spain.

Spain Is Going Through Its Biggest Water Crisis Yet

As per the European Commission’s website, between May 2022 and April 2023, temperatures in northern Morocco, Algeria, southern Spain, and southern France were up to 2.5°C – sometimes 4°C – higher than average. 

During the 1960s, flooding submerged Sant Romà de Sau, an ancient village from the 10th century. The waters covered the Romanic church bell tower, which had previously acted as an indicator for water levels. The Sau Reservoir, previously an important water source for the Spanish people, now lies barren and dry.

Spain has been a tourist spot for many people around the world. Known for its Mediterranean architecture and beautiful beaches, Spain is heading towards a dire situation. With not even enough water to wash dishes or cook, the people of Spain are facing the worst of the drought.

As a traveller, it would be best to hold off on your plans if possible.  And if not, be prepared for the array of issues that may interrupt your plans. With water being essential for almost everything that we do, tourists who were looking to have the “perfect” European vacation may have to wait.
