Humans experience various states of emotions from happy to sad and angry. And just like the list of happiest countries, there are miserable countries across the globe. The Annual Misery Index was developed by John Hopkins University’s Steve Hanke, a professor of applied economics. According to it, Zimbabwe is the most miserable country in the world!

The Annual Misery Index was created to find out the world’s most miserable countries. The indices are created by multiplying the unemployment rate by two, the inflation rate, and the bank lending rate. They are then adjusted for the annual percentage change in real GDP per capita.

According to the report, Zimbabwe, an African country, is ranked as the most miserable country. It has a population of over 16 million people and was engulfed in corruption, violence and economic disaster. Though it is a mineral-rich country, Zimbabwe is facing high-time inflation! And the country has limited scope for GDP growth.

The country to rank second is Venezuela, a South American country that suffered from horrible money mismanagement. Despite being one of the world’s largest oil reserves, the country has a high crime rate. Syria, the Middle Eastern country, was engulfed in a civil war for almost ten years and has ranked third on the list.

Due to its greatest financial crisis in modern history, which has its roots in years of political elite incompetence and corruption, Lebanon was ranked fourth. Since a coup toppled a power-sharing government, Sudan, the fifth in line, has been mired in political turmoil. Argentina, which placed sixth, is likewise experiencing a crisis connected to the cost of living as a result of inflation that has surpassed 100 per cent. And Yemen is ranked seventh on the list of the world’s miserable countries.

Ukraine is defending its territory in a violent conflict brought on by Russian forces. It came in at number eight on the list of suffering, with unemployment playing a significant role. Just below Ukraine in ninth place is Cuba. Inflation there soared in 2021 as a result of the peso, the country’s currency, losing 95 per cent of its value in just one year.
