This includes British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Lufthansa, and KLM. The proposal aims to re-establish direct routes that were discontinued during the COVID-19 pandemic.
It particularly focuses on the long-standing Kolkata-London service that ceased in 2009 after nearly eight decades of operation. The West Bengal government has taken a proactive stance. The Chief Minister personally engaging British Airways during a London visit to discuss route restoration.
Negotiations include potential incentives such as reduced aviation turbine fuel or ATF taxes, currently standing at 30 per cent, to make Kolkata a more attractive destination for international carriers.
