Rangolis are interwoven in the fabric of Indian society and culture. Almost every Indian culture makes their variation of Rangolis on their respective major festivals. Most commonly, Rangolis are made of powdered colours and sometimes, various colourful flowers are also used. Occasionally though, some creative people will put their own innovative twist on the traditional Rangoli and make something that blows everyone away. This instance is no different. This desi mother-daughter duo used ice cream sticks to create a record-breaking Rangoli.
Desi Mother-Daughter Duo Creates Record-Breaking Rangoli
Typically, you’ll see Rangolis made in the standard shape of a mandala. However, these Rangolis are different in every way possible. Unlike the traditional Rangolis which are made using flowers and colours, this Rangoli was made with ice cream sticks.
Around 26,000 ice cream sticks were used to make portraits of famous Tamil scholar-poets. The Rangoli was made by Sudha and Rakshita, a mother-daughter duo, and featured Tamil poets and scholars like Tiruvalluvar, Avvaiyaar, Bharathidasan, and Bharathiyaar.
This 6 by 6 metre Rangoli made it to the Singapore Book Of Records. This news got many reactions from people on the Internet. Many were in awe of the creativity, time and effort that the duo put into their work. Their Rangoli was praised and congratulated by many.
About The Organisers Of The Event
The Rangoli was made as part of the ongoing Pongal festivities in a Singapore-based Indian community event. The event was organised by Little India Shopkeepers & Heritage Association (LISHA) and Kalamanjari, an organisation that aims to promote Tamil culture and heritage. The event took place in the Little India Precinct of Singapore.
The artwork took a month to create and clearly was made with dedication and rigour. It is also important to note that Sudha has another record in the Singapore Book of Records for creating a 3,200 sq. ft. Rangoli back in 2016. This joint victory along with her daughter is another feather in her cap.
