We always have serene beaches in Goa. But have you gazed at the beautiful star-studded sky? Well, Goa is not just about the beaches and parties, but has a gorgeous sky where you can go stargazing! Recently, an automated astronomical observatory in Panaji was inaugurated. And it is a treat for star lovers!
Try Stargazing In Panaji’s Astronomical Observatory
On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of AFA, or Association of Friends of Astronomy, the automated astronomical observatory was inaugurated in Panaji. It is said to offer stimulation just like the interior of a spacecraft. In fact, the dome is remote-controlled and can be coordinated through a smartphone app!
With this technology, the sky gazer can choose the region of the sky they want to observe, and when they do, the dome turns and opens to point a 14-inch automated Celestron telescope in that direction. The Economic Development Corporation of Goa gave the dome to the AFA as part of its CSR programme; it was built for roughly Rs 7 lakh.

Association of Friends of Astronomy
The Association of Friends of Astronomy was founded in 1982 by a retired government officer Mr Percival Noronha and a group of astronomy enthusiasts. In fact, the Public Astronomical Observatory at Panaji was the first of its kind! Tourists and amateur astronomy enthusiasts are welcome, and the knowledgeable residents are happy to assist them.
Besides Panaji, they have centres in Margao, Mapusa, Morjim, Canacona, Sakhali, Borim, Vasco, Porvorim and Arambol. They also conduct events like a daily observatory, beach astronomy and star party. For school kids, they have special programmes and workshops. They even have a science film festival, which is a week-long Astro film festival.
They have some beautiful pics of astronomical events and the sky. From starlit skies to bright meteor showers, they have everything that you can search for! It is almost hard to believe that these are real pics! You can check their website for upcoming celestial events happening this year.
