The first to hatch was Noddy (male) on March 4, born to Olive and Poppy. Shortly after that, Daisy and Donald welcomed Tom (male) on March 7, followed by Pingu (female) on March 11. The three baby penguins will be able to explore the pool area in about three months.
Both the set of parents have been long-time residents of the zoo. On April 25, the zoo authorities took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce the birth of the baby penguins. The announcement aligned with World Penguin Day.

It is interesting to note that this is the first time in more than a year that the Byculla Zoo has seen a new baby penguin. Before this, the zoo had welcomed three penguins in 2023. At that time, three different pairs of parents gave birth to Coco (female), Stella (female) and Jerry (male).

Growing Family Of 21
The birth of these three new baby penguins has brought the Byculla Zoo’s penguin population to 21. Reportedly, eight penguins–three males and five females–were first brought to the zoo in July 2016 from South Korea’s Coex Aquarium. Currently, there are 11 males and 10 females at the zoo.
Mumbai’s Byculla Zoo can accommodate up to 25 penguins within its premises. It was built in 2017, shortly after the penguins were flown in. However, reports suggest that the zoo authorities plan to expand the facility by 400 sq ft to accommodate more penguins in the future. This will also allow more space for the current population to breed without overcrowding.
The baby penguins are, reportedly, healthy and growing well under the care of their parents and zoo staff.
We can’t wait to see these cute little penguins grow and brighten up Byculla Zoo! Share your two cents about this in the comments.
