Traffic Congestion Becomes Common Sight In Coimbatore After U-Turn Systems Replace Signals

You all must have read about Coimbatore City Police’s initiative to bring in U-turn systems and replace the traditional traffic signals. They experienced a significant setback because their initiative to remove traffic lights from roadways did not have the desired impact. In many places where U-turns are used in place of signals, traffic jams are a typical occurrence, especially during rush hour.

Traffic congestion has become a common sight in Coimbatore, and now drivers are pleading with the police to go back to the previous method.

However, sources within the police force stated that the arrangement would not be reviewed. They noted that research had been done on the causes and procedures for removing the backlog. There were 55 active traffic lights in the city. However, police replaced all but eleven with U-turns and roundabouts in an effort to reduce traffic congestion.

This program is currently in use at numerous locations along Trichy Road, Sathyamangalam Road, and Avinashi Road, and it enables drivers to move forward without having to wait at congested crossroads. Additionally, it saves fuel and travel time. However, the public is now concerned due to the alarming rise in traffic congestion.

Drivers of heavier trucks lament the slow-moving traffic, while those in light cars express their dread of collisions. At the Gandhipuram junction, where Omni and Mofussil buses run, the Uppilipalayam junction, where Avinashi Road begins, the LIC junction, and the Lakshmi Mill junction, there is substantial bus traffic.

Vincent Road Junction on the Sungam Bypass, Ganapathy Junction on Sathy Road, and the U-Turn in front of the Thandumariyamman Kovil in Uppilipalayam are other locations that commonly experience traffic congestion and require rapid improvement.

Coimbatore Police Commissioner V Balakrishnan told TNIE that he has noted the issue spots and that precautions are being taken based on public opinion to avoid accidents. He promised to provide the cops with immediate instructions to address the problems.  (As per The New Indian Express)
