Imagine catching a train from Tamil Nadu and arriving in Sri Lanka; sounds like a travel fantasy, right? With the proposed Dhanushkodi-Talaimannar rail line project, this could soon become a reality, as India and Sri Lanka explore reviving a long-lost route that once connected the two nations.
Dhanushkodi-Talaimannar Rail Line Project To Restore Historic Link

The Dhanushkodi-Talaimannar rail line project aims to reconnect Dhanushkodi in Tamil Nadu to Talaimannar in north-western Sri Lanka through a cross-border railway link across the Palk Strait. This isn’t a brand-new concept – the original route, operational during British colonial times, allowed passengers to travel from Chennai to Colombo via ferry. However, it was discontinued in 1964 after a devastating cyclone struck Dhanushkodi.

Now, with a projected investment of ₹35,000 crore, the Indian government is considering the revival of this historic railway link. If implemented, it would drastically reduce travel time, promote tourism, and boost trade between the two countries.
Why The Dhanushkodi-Talaimannar Rail Line Project Matters

The Dhanushkodi-Talaimannar rail line project is seen as a significant step toward enhancing regional connectivity. India already shares rail links with Bangladesh and Pakistan (although services are currently suspended), and there are similar plans in progress with Nepal and Bhutan.

Former Indian Railways GM Lalit Chandra Trivedi recently discussed the proposed Dhanushkodi-Talaimannar rail link in an exclusive interview with ET Now. He highlighted how the project could “reshape South Asian transport” and cement India’s role as a logistics leader in the region. The proposed link would not only benefit international relations but also uplift coastal communities in Tamil Nadu by improving infrastructure and job opportunities.
Challenges Facing The Dhanushkodi-Talaimannar Rail Line Project
While the Dhanushkodi-Talaimannar rail line project holds massive potential, there are challenges ahead. Environmental concerns, the shallow depth of the Palk Strait, and diplomatic agreements between the two nations need to be addressed before work can begin.

Still, the idea has captured public attention, and early discussions indicate growing interest from both sides. If brought to life, this rail link could become one of the most iconic transport corridors in South Asia. It will allow travellers to explore Sri Lanka by simply boarding a train in India.
