Air travel is going to be disrupted over the coming days in India. Flights of several airlines, including Air India, IndiGo and Air India Express, could see delays and even cancellations. This comes after issues linked to the Airbus A320. Half of its fleet will be grounded for a software upgrade, and Indian airlines use many of these models. Here’s more on this.
Over 350 Airbus A320 Aircraft In India Set to Be Grounded
Over 350 IndiGo and Air India aircraft in India will be grounded for a software upgrade. These models belong to the Airbus A320 family and will undergo upgrades and fixes. Not just in India, but flights across the world are also expected to be impacted as the Airbus A320 is the world’s largest-selling single-aisle aircraft.
According to a report by Hindustan Times, this comes after 15 passengers on a JetBlue-operated Airbus A320 from Mexico were injured. The plane experienced a sudden drop in altitude, which led to an emergency landing in Florida earlier this month. Due to this incident, authorities have now decided to ground over half of the active A320 family fleet for a software fix.
Reportedly, Indian airlines have around 560 A320 family aircraft, and most of them will require changes and hardware adjustments. In short, flights scheduled on these aircraft are expected to be delayed or cancelled.
Flight Operations Could Be Disrupted For The Next Few Days
According to a report by The Times of India, the Airbus A320 planes of IndiGo and Air India Group will be grounded for upgrades that are expected to be over in 2-3 days. They are likely to resume flights by next Monday or Tuesday. For the newer A320 planes, the work will take about half an hour each. But older models will need hardware updates, which could take longer. Globally, about 6,000 flights are expected to be impacted by these Airbus A320 upgrades.
Air India also took to X to confirm the news. They stated that authorities were aware of the directive issued by Airbus for their A320 fleet, adding that these upgrades could lead to “longer turnaround time and delays to our scheduled operations.”
