Cairo International Airport has made the confusing experience of big airports easier, and it has won a prestigious award for its work. The Airports Council International Africa gave the airport the 2026 Digital Innovation and Community Engagement Award for its AI-powered travel assistant, “Ask Mariam”.
Say Hello To “Ask Mariam” At Cairo International Airport
“Ask Mariam” was launched in October 2025 and is like a digital guide you didn’t know you needed.
Smart devices scattered throughout the airport facilitate its operation. Touch the screen, ask a question, and get answers right away. Updates on flights? Done. How to get around inside the terminal? Simple. Do you want a taxi or a limo? Organised.
The system can be used in both Arabic and English, so it is useful for people from both countries and around the world.
As per the Scene Now assistant is now part of a larger plan to modernise Egypt’s aviation sector with smarter, paperless services that improve how passengers move through airports.
Real Numbers, Real Results
This initiative isn’t just a flashy launch; people are actually using it. The 75th ACI Africa Conference and Exhibition in Luanda gave out the award. This solidified Cairo’s digital push.
More than 33,700 people used the system in its first four months. The growth tells its story. Usage went up from 2,900 in November 2025 to 15,800 in February 2026.
That is a steady rise, not a one-time spike. About 94% of the people who used it were travellers from other countries. That means that people who don’t know the airport well are finding it helpful, which is probably the hardest group to please.
Why This Is Important For Travellers?
Airports often say they will give you a “better experience”, but they don’t always deliver. It seems different this time.
“Ask Mariam” helps with everyday problems. Where is my gate? How do I get a taxi? What are some things to do nearby if I have some spare time? Instead of looking for signs or staff, tourists can get quick answers right away.
It saves time, lowers stress and it makes a busy airport feel a little less overwhelming.
A Glimpse Into The Future Of Airports
Cairo’s move is part of a bigger change.
Airports all over the world are buying tools that make things easier, like fewer lines, less paperwork, and faster decisions. These kinds of AI assistants might soon be the norm, not the exception. Currently, Cairo International Airport is the centre of attention.
